AIPSC Demands to set up Agricultural Co-Operatives for Production & Marketing of Agricultural Produce

The crisis in agriculture has engulfed whole state as reflected in the suicides of the farmers. Cumulatively between 1995 and 2012, about 40,000 farmers have been reported to have committed suicide in Karnataka; this is about 13 per cent of all farmers’ suicides in India as a whole in the same period.

The farmers of the state need agricultural co-operatives to ensure planned production of agricultural produce to minimize the waste and reap better price for their produce through organized marketing support. There have been good examples of such co-operatives like KMF, HOPCOMs, etc. This will help in easy transfer of agricultural produce from rural to urban area with complete elimination of middle men. Increasing revenue for farmers will result in better education, health and other indicators. In addition to this, pro-farmers steps like more easy credit to farmers, better weather forecasting facilities, basic weather monitoring systems at gram panchayat level, soil monitoring facilities to choose the crops, orienting agricultural universities to focus on development of high yield varieties, pest and drought resistant varieties, etc. are need of the hour.

In this background, All India People's Science Congress – 2015 demands that the state Government shall take steps to set up agricultural co-operatives in a massive scale to support the farmers and implement the steps which are pro-farmer.
